Kennedy Middle School
Guidance Department
Kennedy Middle School proudly provides a comprehensive developmental guidance program for its students. The program includes:
- Large group guidance
- Small group counseling
- Individual counseling
- Peer helpers
- Peer Mediation
- Peer Tutors
- Consultation with parents, teachers, and administrators
- Coordination of guidance related services
The program is based on the developmental perspective supporting the view that all students need to have certain skills and experiences as part of their educational process, and that human nature moves individuals sequentially and positively toward self-enhancement. It is based on the developmental stages that most proceed through from childhood to adulthood. Developmentalists recognize that feelings, ideas, and behaviors are linked together. The developmental approach is preventative enabling students to learn and develop skills and behaviors that will prevent problems or encourage them to manage problems appropriately. It utilizes teaching, coaching, tutoring, instructing, informing, and counseling as elements of the guidance program. The developmental guidance program requires the help of all school personnel in order to accomplish its goals. (Myrick, Robert D., Developmental Guidance and Counseling: A Practical Approach, 1993)
