Michele Filbert was born and raised in Hays, Kansas, where she attended Hays High School and Fort Hays State University. Mrs. Filbert graduated in 1976, with a Bachelor of Music Education degree. In 1994, she received her Master of Science degree in Special Education/Learning Disabilities from Fort Hays State University. For seven years after graduation, she was the K-12 vocal and instrumental music instructor for USD 304 in Bazine, Kansas. She was the instrumental and vocal instructor at Ness City High School for 11 years. In the Hays school district, she is currently the director of bands at Felten Middle School. She also serves as the woodwind specialist for the district and teaches at Kennedy Middle School and Hays High School in this capacity. She is currently the music department chairman for USD 489.

Mrs. Filbert is a member or the Music Educators National Conference and the Kansas Music Educators Association. She has had the privilege of being an adjudicator at instrumental clinics for middle school and high school level students, a clinician at district and league festivals, a flute clinician at the High Plains Music Camp and flute instructor at the Lions State Band Camp. Mrs. Filbert has a private flute studio in addition to her teaching responsibilities. She is currently serving as the National Music Director for Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority headquartered in Woodstock, Virginia. Mrs. Filbert was honored with the "Woman of the Year" award for Ness County in 1998.

In addition to Mrs. Filbert's musical activities, she performs with the Hope Quartet, the Hays Civic Symphony, the FHSU flute choir, and the First United Methodist Church bell choir. She is asked to perform often on her flute throughout the community. She has three daughters, Kelli, Courtney and Casey and spends as much time as possible attending their activities. You will find Mrs. Filbert and her husband at the University of Nebraska Cornhusker's football games during football season.
